Larry kisses the top of her head as he holds her tightly, his own sobs mixing with hers. He was barely eleven years old. He hadn’t even gotten to live his life yet. And suddenly, one quick trip to the park had snuffed him out then and there. He had the sudden desire to strangle the men responsible. He wanted to snuff them out. He wanted them to pay for what they’d done to his son.
Matthew holds onto his uncle and cries into his chest, finally letting himself be swept away in the ache in his chest. “My brother’s gone..” he says as though saying it aloud will make it somehow untrue. How could this have happened? He couldn’t believe that he would never see his big brother again.
Ally felt broken. No parent should have to grieve over their children, Julian should still be with them, laughing and talking about baseball. Just earlier that day, he’d been telling her how excited he was for the playoffs in which the Boston Red Sox would be playing in. Now, that beautiful life they’d created together had been taken from them. Her pain was mixed with anger, though it was buried by the sorrow she felt.
Rob rested his cheek against the top of Matthew’s head, his eyes falling closed as the anguish he also felt trickled along his cheeks. He had no other words of wisdom. If he hadn’t been in the operating room, he probably wouldn’t have believed it himself. After every obstacle the family had gone through, one would think that they’d be able to catch a break.
