Matthew continues to cry into his mother’s shoulder, unable to fully grasp the concept of not having a brother anymore. Without his brother, he felt lost and confused and hurt. He didn’t think it was possible to ever feel this way. The thought of seeing someone every day and then suddenly being without them forever is unbearable.
After several long minutes, Larry finally pulls away from his brother and rubs the tears from his eyes. “Uh-” his voice cracks and he pushes away his despair. “Ally’s arm is injured. I think it’s still bleeding.” He takes a deep, rattling breath as he looks over his shoulder down at his wife and son.
When Larry pulls back, the doctor quickly brings his hands up to wipe at his eyes, and clears his throat softly. He was certain that would be the first of many breakdowns. The pain, while sure it could be pushed down momentarily, wasn’t something that Rob expected to pass any time soon. At his brothers statement, his brow raises and he turns his attention towards Ally’s arm. From what he could tell, Larry’s assumption was correct, though with everything going on he could see how it could be overlooked. “Has anyone been by to check on it?” he asks weakly, before shaking his head. “Never mind, I’ll get it cleaned up…”
Ally keeps hold of Matthew, her body shaking violently as she rubs soothingly along his back. It wasn’t much, but it was all she could offer at that point. She couldn’t find words to express any sort of feeling at the moment, and she knew that there was nothing that could be said to lessen the pain. “We’ll get through this… I don’t know how, but we will…” she says, though in the depths of her words, there was uncertainty.
