Larry rubs his face and tries to quiet the dark thoughts in his head, taking his glasses off and cleaning them on the end of his tie nervously. Once he places them back onto his nose, he perches himself in front of Ally and leans down to kiss her forehead. “I’m sorry.” He says softly, pulling her into a gentle embrace. He knows nothing he can say or do will rid the ache from either of them, but he tries nonetheless.

Once the doors open, he runs his hands up to cup her cheeks. His thumbs brush over them and he stares down at her. After a quiet, solitary moment, he takes her hand and pulls her back to their waiting children. With a grim nod at the nurse, he sees that Matthew had fallen asleep and he reaches down to pick him up. With the boy nestled against his chest, he clears another lump from his throats and sighs.

In the few moments that they stood there in the elevator, Ally curls her arms around him and rests her cheek against his chest. “I’m sorry too…” She says, her eyes falling closed as she rubs along his back soothingly. It didn’t take too long for the elevator to reach the bottom floor, the doors opening with a silent ding, and she instantly looks up at him when he brings his hands up to her cheeks. “We’ll get each other through this… don’t know how, but… just one step at a time.” She says, her voice soft and weak.

After that, she puts herself back on auto pilot, before crouching down to make sure that Katie’s blanket kept the sleeping infant protected from the weather outside, and lifts her carrier with her good arm. The last thing she wanted to do was go home, but they couldn’t stay at the hospital indefinitely. That certainly wouldn’t make things any better. One step at a time, first they had to make it to the car, then she’d dwell on the difficulties of being in the house in which had so many memories of Julian within its walls.
