“As far as I’m concerned, he can stay right where he is if it makes him feel even remotely better.” He kisses the top of her head as she leans against him and can see the turmoil in her features. They’d both had a rough night of endless sleep and he wouldn’t fault her for spending the day crying like he felt like doing. But he would inevitably end up sitting by the phone, waiting for his brother’s call.
He takes her face in his hands and kisses her forehead softly, his thumbs running soothingly over her cheeks. “Poor kids.” Julian and Matthew had always been close with Nathan’s kids, and this blow would be devastating for all of them. Setting aside his dislike for his former friend, he nods. “I’m sure he’d appreciate the call.” Larry leans down and gives his wife a gentle kiss, sighing against her lips.
“… he’d do the same for us if the roles were reversed.” Ally states, her eyes searching her husbands as she let out a soft sigh. Given how close they were in age, Julian and Lucas were best friends from birth. Despite their parents’ issues, that had always remained the same. At the feel of Larry’s lips pressing to hers, she lets her eyes fall closed, her breath catching against him.
“And then after that call, I’m going to call the firm and let them know that we’ll be out for a while, some of our cases will need to be postponed or passed off.” She wanted to curl up in a ball and spend her day crying. But she knew that if she allowed herself to become engulfed by her emotions, she would be pretty much useless. This was how Ally coped with anything. She kept herself going, almost like a robot running on infinite battery life.
