Larry watches her retreat from the office and heaves a sigh as she leaves him alone with his thoughts. This day would be one of the hardest they would ever have to endure, followed by the day that they would actually have to bury their son. With reluctance, he lifts himself from the chair and follows his wife out of the office.

He sees Matthew and the dogs all huddled on the couch and Larry traipses in their direction. He lifts the little boy from his spot and sits, pulling Matthew into his lap and propping his feet onto the coffee table. Matthew looks up at him and settles against his father. The dogs maneuver themselves to fit more properly on the couch and Larry reaches over to pat each one.

It didn’t take long for Ally to reach her friend, the request being accepted almost instantly, though the sorrow of the situation had clearly shook Renee to her very core. She’d known Ally most of her adult life, so it was only natural that she’d been a big part of their children’s lives. “Thanks Renee, we really appreciate it…” Ally says after conversing with the woman, who understandably was stricken with grief over the news. “See you soon, okay?”

With the quick goodbye on the other end of the phone, Ally quickly hangs up and slides her phone into her back pocket, before heading out to the living room. She said nothing as she sat down in the loveseat adjacent from the couch and props her head up onto her palm. Ally wasn’t ready, and she didn’t think that she ever would be, but what choice did she have?
